My daughter picked up her results today, the entirety of her childhood has been spent trying to get help for her low self esteem, depression, and obvious autistic traits. No one was any use what so ever, but she picked up her results and got 9 GCSEs at C or above. So happy for her and hope college is kinder environment for her.
Another consequence of gutting the education budget.

My Trading Feedback | You Bring The Band
Just because you're paranoid, don't mean they're not after youx 3 at 6 grade - 2 of these in English
x 4 at 7 grade inc maths
x 1 at 9 grade - geography which she is ecstatic about
x 1 at A grade - business studies - apparently still in the old A, B, C format for some reason
the x 2 grade 6 results that came in English at first surprised her, as a bit below expectation - Yet her best friend, who is somewhat of a grade 9 brainiac, got the same x 2 at grade 6 for English
Overall she is happy and content - She always knew she could have worked harder, but adopted why go for a 9 when a 7 or 8 will still get you in the 6th form and a lot less work required
She'll go on it the 6th form - maths - business studies and economics - Don't think she wants to go to Uni
Congrats @richardhomer @Legionreturns and @underdog and all who follow this posting
My daughter has a friend at school who is straight 9's etc - She said she would be upset if she got an 8 - My daughter said that was disrespectful for those who fight hard to get a 5, 6, 7, or 8 - And as such she should be grateful about it and not snobby in an intelligent way - So yes I'm glad for you and the appropriate kids
My experience (as a non-9er) is that the people who got 9s put in far, far more work and deserved the higher grades.
Yet the education system equally produces the future shelf stackers, along with all the other poorly paid jobs - So if someone works equally hard, as a grade 9er, but possesses far less natural ability, yet such work can take them from a grade 1/2 or 3 to a 5 and hopefully allows them to follow a more fulfilling career, then they deserve to be applauded - But you don't see this reflected in any praise via the education system - As @Legionreturns mentions above, a 'troubled kid' achieving 4 in maths is something to be proud of
I have a friend in town who was crap at all school lessons - low education achiever etc - But somehow he bonded with the wood work teacher - He is now a joiner - Self employed and so popular and good at his job, that he is quoting at least 3 months starting time for any new work - Government education stats will just show him as a low achiever - Yet total credit to him for finding something he is good at, enjoys and able to earn a living from, to support him and the family
So yes the grade 9er only getting an 8 can be disappointed - But they are not the only one who has worked hard
When you are looking at you own personal results, or your own child's results then I think the goal is a measure of effort and achievement and as such a personal level of calibration needs to be applied but equally I think when you're looking at the system as a whole there isn't necessarily anything wrong with giving recognition to those at the top and of course institutions should be measured on a result that reflects their entire performance range.
The people getting the top grades will all have worked hard - "natural talent" is at most the first 5% and the last 5% - everything else is effort.
I don't want to be in an aeroplane designed by a 5. Do you?
People who work hard and get good results should be applauded, not knocked down by underachievers for making them look bad.
My daughter got 2 A’s, 9 B’s & 2 C’s (in Wales we still have the old grading system)
he is currently still on cloud 9
