I'm tempted by a red one as my first bass. Are they active pickups? It needs a battery but the specs describe the pickups as passive. Does it really matter if they are active or passive if just using it for home recording use?

I love their basses, but that is getting silly.

Having said that I paid £600 for my 2001 blue dawn... bargain!
Sold it though. Like an idiot!

In this price bracket, the pickups will almost certainly be of the stud pole and underslung ceramic bar magnet persuasion. The 2-band active EQ will be a simple PCB and block connectors affair. (Nothing intrinsically wrong about either of these features. On the other hand, they might explain the need to roll down the treble on your amplifier.) Give the instrument a fair crack in standard spec before investigating possible modifications or upgrades.
But I’ve tried a few Ibanez cheaper models and they have never disappointed..
