There’s a few people who I wish would re-record tunes from the 80s with more, shall we say ‘organic’ sounds
Like the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Would be amazing to hear their stuff without the ‘80s teen comedy theme tune snare sound.

i was like the OP, just knew the hits from the 80s then starting listening to Tres Hombres and the older stuff and now Billy Gibbons is one of my favourite guitarists.
I saw them live in Manchester about 4 years ago and he was great, his tone was pretty gainy live too, much more hair on it than i would have thought, but he plays with a very light touch

    Jesus just left Chicago

I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

The Tres Hombres album had a huge impact on me.

Also, Blue Jean Blues from the Fandango album has some of the most expressive blues playing ever IMHO.
    It's not a competition.

Totally agree, I think blue jean blues is the finest example of a slow blues I have ever heard

Love all the 70's ZZ Top music especially, saw them in 1980 in a huge stadium, great show.     I still get "Cheap Sunglasses" stuck in my head like an earworm from time to time but it doesn't bother me.

    Fandango - great album.

As for that clip from Howard Stern - that's how a three-piece band should sound.

I never realised there was so much love for the Top! I am really hooked on their early stuff it's just fantastic, not since hearing Led Zeppelin for the first time have I been moved by a band but there is some crazily good stuff on the albums I bought. I so far have:

    Rio Grande Mud
    Tres Hombres
    Fandango!
    Deguello
    Eliminator
    Afterburner
    recycler
    El Loco
    Tejas
    First Album

Is there anything missing that I should be looking for?
Tomorrow will be a good day.

Just as mentioned above probably Live in Germany - Rockpalast 1980. DVD or CD/ streaming. I think XXX for the better of the modern albums.
If you want to be a real completist nerd then The Texas Tapes by Rainer and Das Combo although it doesn't sound that much like ZZ Top. Billy's last solo album for some straight ahead blues.

One of the most over-rated bands, music, player and 'tone' ever, in my opinion. And I don't just mean the Eliminator period.

    Someone had to say it...

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

I couldn't disagree with you more @ICBM ...bands don't last the length of time and have the success they have had especially with the original line up, unless they had something special.  I appreciate you may not be their greatest fan but they have a feel and that certain 'something' and sound that's stood the test of time.

And it was the Elliminator album that first introduced me to them ... I was hooked from the very first time I saw them which was on the Tube in 1983 and the great video trilogy of Gimme all your loving, Sharp dressed man, and legs.  It was only then that I discovered all their back catalogue.

Anyway, I love 'em, I enjoy playing their stuff, and audiences I've played to always enjoy ZZ stuff too.
