I know it is crazy and there are some parts with more expensive houses with retirees living there. The lack of Cornwall type weather may also have something to do with it.
A lot of the draws Nairn used to have for younger folks are long gone as are some of the larger employers, apart from Cap Gemini and Sainsbury's.
Tourism is still quite big employer too I guess but the tourism is no where like the 60' to 80's.
Here is a random sample of what can be had at various price points.

A few years back a friends MIL moved from London to be closer to her daughter and the grandkids so she sold her fairly modest mid terrace house in that ther London and promptly bought two houses.
One to live in and one to rent, she still had money left over from selling up daan saarth.
Here is a random sample of some here in Inverness.

Recently repo'd from the guy Craig Whyte who used to own or be in charge of Rangers.
An old band I was in rehearsed in the gatehouse of the above castle in the late 80's and we even made a silly promo video there.
Our Bass players mum was a very good friend of the guy that owned it then and he was the guy that used to own RSD and IIRC Studiomaster, he even lent us a desk and speaker etcs for rehearsals.
Here is another belter in a Spa town close by.

Apparently because we tend to rent more up here the prices are even lower than they naturally would be compared to many UK regions.
In Northwich, Cheshire, you are in the middle of nice countryside, can commute into Manchester, Liverpool, etc, and are near the M6
Northwich was in the 3 "best places to live" in the latest Sunday Times survey for Cheshire. http://www.northwichguardian.co.uk/news/10296843.Is_Northwich_one_of_the_best_places_to_live_/?ref=rc

This is why I keep telling people who live in Manchester and are convinced that Cheshire is full of multi-millionaires that they are missing an opportunity (In fact this is the lesson I was taught 12 years ago)
for under £500k you can have these:
