The scale/mode idea is good, though.

Just pick a genre that's fairly accessible. Or maybe choose a time signature.

I've really enjoyed making random skronks from guitar/softsynths then stretching/filtering and generally mangling the results out of all recognition.
I doubt I'll submit my piece as nobody other than me would listen to it but the whole idea of immersing oneself into an unusual musical situation has been very interesting and refreshing. It's funny but trying to make an avant-garde, unstructured noise has been a lot harder than I thought it would be. You get just as obsessive over a swoosh or fart noise as you do over the perfect blackface spoiled clean neck pickup tone or whatever your particular grail sound happens to be.
I suppose I'm trying to say that there is merit in going outside the usual "produce a blues riff in A" sort of thing. I prefer the less prescriptive tasks like "dog music" or "theme from an imaginary sitcom" to something dictating exactly what chords I have to use.
...of course, you could say that trying something you might not ordinarily do is the essence of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and therefore having to impersonate Joe fucking Bonamassa might be deeply improving in some way.
That sounds like just my cup of tea - I love a good skronk.
They were then mashed up into something resembling musical Pâté. Actually this makes it sound more appealing than it is. Musical slurry perhaps? Sort of like the audio equivalent of that mechanically recovered intestinal mucous that they make burgers out of.
Have just listened to it and it's not even as interesting as that. You'll just have to trust me on this one
I think the thing is that some people like ordered challenges and some like open ones, and given we are doing and open one at the moment it is probably time to give a bit of order to proceedings :-)
Don't worry though I have an idea for a realy awesome challenge after this one.
