Stubborn Ring Finger

My ring finger sometimes feels like someone elses. It won't obey. If i try to trill, holding down the top e with first finger and using ring finger to hammer 3 frets up it's very awkward. The same manoeuvre using my index finger is easy and natural, but only works up the neck a bit because of the stretch. I've been playing 40 yrs and have done loads of excercises to try and change this. It's better after warming up but still a reluctant digit.

Any suggestions ?

I hate my ring finger, I'm exactly the same, it refuses to do the thing. Pisses me off watching somebody effortlessly knock off Eruption or something. Seems even my little finger works better for this sort of thing.

Not recommending it of course but it seems to work a lot better (faster) when I've had a couple of pints, which would seem to suggest it's a relaxed muscles problem.
