Now need to listen to the classics... started with Obituary
Excellent post-metal stoner with electronic edges and sludge shoegaze overtones.
Start with Pale Explosions.

A couple of thigs I'd add to that list.
Repulsion - Horrified. Releasd in 1989 but actually a demo from 1986. This is absolutely key to pretty much all extreme metal.
Hellhammer - Demons Entrails pretty much covers all their material. Short lived and pre-Celtic Frost. PRimitive teen angst and still killer 36 years later
Master - Unreleased 1985 Album. Not released until about 15 years ago, as the name implies, but heavily traded and influenced loads.
Devastation - Creation Of My Ripping Death demo. A seminal moment. LG Petrov from Entombed did an actually double take when he saw my Devastation shirt at Hellfest one year. A fave of Napalm Death, Entombed, Dark Throne and Mike Ammott.
Sindrome - Into The Halls Of Extermination. Featured Troy Dixler from Devastation and also Sean Glass. later of Broken Hope and Soil. It's a demo but supposedly one of the best selling death metal releases of of the 80s. They reckon they sold 30,000 or so
Really like the The Moth Gatherer's stuff, thanks @Octatonic
And @reverend , I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the really early stuff, but some of that is outstanding, Hellhammer in particular ! I can detect the influences of US hardcore punk, Black Flag etc combining with thrash etc.
@jetsam1 be our guest...… and let us know how you get on.
My latest discovery is Hooded Menace from Finland, the new album, The Tritonus Bell, is incredible Doom/Death with some 80's metal/thrash elements thrown in. It's brutal and the production and musicianship are outstanding.
Also, the Doom front, new album by a Philadelphia band, Heavy Temple, doomy/sabbathy with psychedelic elements, love the lead guitars on this, lots of wah, reverb/delay etc
What else is about?
The Suns Journey Throgh The Night
Wagner Odegard
Lamp of Murmuur
