I recently bought this Berlin Wall as a replacement for my Eggle / Norsworthy Custom. My intention was to fit a pair of EMG pickups in order to retain something of the sound the Norsworthy gave me. However, having just tried to install the new EMGs I've found that they don't fit in the pickup cavities, probably due to the slightly oversized plastic covers of the pickups.
As I don't want to start hacking at the guitar to make them fit, I'm offering it here for the price it cost me: £420 (plus delivery)
Having said that, it's a fabulous sounding and playing instrument, so there's a bit of me that's inclined to hang on to it....
Here's what I know about the guitar:
Essentially it's a Berlin Wall, but it has no headstock logo and no serial number. In addition to this, the neck and headstock profile is shallower than a standard Berlin Wall. With those points in mind, I assume this to be an employee built guitar rather than a standard factory spec instrument - this was known to happen from time to time during the 90s.
Here are the key things you'll need to know:
Bad Points:
There are a few small dings on the edge and one on the back and some light marks / pitting to the lacquer
The trem cavity cover isn't quite the right fit
The neck pickup appears to have originally had some kind of cover which has been removed, but is missing the tape that wraps around the bobbins and also still has some signs of wax
The body has been given a bit of a 'scraped/natural edge binding' treatment - as this guitar doesn't have a maple cap, I'm not convinced that this really enhances the guitar and you can feel the change in finish at this point (where it goes from lacquer to unlacquered)
Good Points
The neck, headstock and fingerboard are all in excellent condition and the neck profile feels great. There is no fret wear.
The hardware is all high quality: Schaller Floyd Rose trem, Sperzel locking tuners
Quality pickups: Dimarzio (DP211 I think) at the neck and a Suhr SSV at the bridge
The guitar looks great, plays really well, hold its tuning well and the range of humbucking and coil split tones are very versatile.
It comes with a decent gig bag
And all for a price which reflects that it may not be a standard factory spec guitar, but it's still a heck of a great guitar for Korean / Indonesian production guitar money
