There is no need to specify which decade. Does that not say a lot??

I've only seen them on film, but they were awesome in the '70s.  Subsequently.... probably less so.

  • I saw Floyd at Live 8 and that was astonishing but almost didn't feel real.

Nearly forgot Mrs Citizen & I were at that too & it was surreal indeed. Unfortunately we were out all day in t-shirts & hadn't brought something warm so by the time PF came on we were in Ice Station Zebra mode lol - just glad to have seen it though!!
    Seemed like a good idea.....

Dire Straits On Every Street Tour, saw then 3 times! Utterly outstanding.
Muse at the IOW Festival probably one of the best love acts Ive ever seen.
Sex Pistols at the IOW Festival 10/10 for making the hairs on my arm stand on end with Pretty Vacant.
Stranger from another planet welcome to our hole - Just strap on your guitar and we'll play some rock 'n' roll

I don't know if this is a comment about The Who (I don't see any emoticons) or..... what your opinion of the band is.
But......other people thought they were astonishing at The Concert for New York (October 2001). So that is 5 decades.
I defend your right to an opinion on what they did in the 6th decade and I will come back to the thread 5 years from now to find out what that is....

  • The Ramones. Town and Country Club October 1989. The place was rammed. The lights went out and the chant of Hey Ho Lets Go started up. The circled eagle back drop was illuminated, there was a hiss as dry ice flooded the venue and the theme to The Good The Bad & The Ugly blasted out at us. Four leather clad figures emerged from the mist. 1,2,3,4 and they were off. It was so loud that my internal organs were vibrating. They played 32 songs in less than an hour. I've seen a lot of bands but The Ramones were truly awesome!

  • Saw Sammy Hagar at Southampton Gaumont in 81, that was pretty good, but John Hiatt at Shepherds Bush Empire during his little head tour, and that was absolutely stunning! Shocked me to the core how good a 4pc band could be!
Waylon Jennings was pretty special but low key, filmed as a concert as well.
Status quo as an out and out entertainment for all the family type gig, take some beating though!

  • Them Crooked Vultures, although if you want to include fantasy bands then just add Trent Reznor to the lineup.

  • The best live shows I've seen were Floyd, Camel, and Focus. Natch Floyd were the most visually spectacular, but I'm taking into account musicianship as well.
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

Cocteau Twins - saw them 4 times and each was unreal. They will never reform.

Jeff Buckley - saw him twice but Reading Festival in the marquee was something I don't think I'll ever witness the like of again.

Coldplay - I proposed to my wife during 'Wonderful World / Fix You' at their 2011 Glasto appearance. Coldplay haters meh. I first saw them at the Hop and Grape bar in Manc about 3 months after 'Yellow' came out. Brilliant back then as now.

Pulp - Glasto 95 when they filled in for Stone Roses. Pulp were magical. Roses were always shit live so I was glad they pulled out.

    Nearly forgot-

    Two more:

Bowie- especially the Sound and Vision tour with the incomparable Adrian Belew who stole even David's thunder

LennY Kravitz- absolutely amazing- especially Craig Ross.

Re Belew- watch this and weep.

Adrian Belew is one of those guitarists I have huge respect for, even though I'm not a massive fan of the bands he's played with.  His playing's so unique and he seems like an intelligent, down to earth person rather than a tedious rock star type.

I'm not someone who likes to meet "celebrities" even when I've had the chance to do so, it's usually such an artificial "us and them" environment and you can't actually talk to them properly.  But I saw Belew walking down the street in London once and I've always regretted not going up to shake his hand and just say hello.

Saw them on their recent Pornograffiti tour, and they completely blew my mind.
Agreed - saw them on their 2008 Take Us Alive tour and it was far and away the best gig ever. Harmonies and Nuno's beastly playing still evident...

I'll agree with the OP though in that Maiden also take some beating as a live act.

Primal scream on the xtrmntr tour in 99/00 with Kevin shields on guitar. Maybe not the greatest musicians that ever lived. But it blew my fragile little mind.

Prince's band circa Musicology era, tightest and most musical band I have ever heard.

Two that stick in my mind are Pink Floyd DSOTM tour at Earls Court IIRC, and Peter Green at the Camden Jazz Cafe. Peter Green, unfortunately, is a shadow of what he could have been had things worked out differently, but still a master of phrasing and emotive playing. Perfect.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Eric Johnson and his band in 91, seriously good musicians.

Man from the early 90s, the Mickey Jones/ Deke Leonard/ Martin Ace/Terry Williams lineup.
