I watched a Rhett Shull video where he compares & ranks the 5 Jazzmasters he tries & made a note of the pickups each of them had, just to try & get my head around them a bit more.
5. Fender American Ultra Jazzmaster - Ultra Noiseless Vintage Jazzmaster Single-coil
4. Fender American Pro II Jazzmaster - Fender V-Mod II Jazzmaster Single-coil
3. Fender Custom Shop '59 Jazzmaster - Fender Custom Shop Hand-Wound Jazzmaster Single-coil
2. Squier '60s Classic Vibe Jazzmaster - Fender Designed Alnico Single-coil
1. Fender Vintera II '50s Jazzmaster - Fender Vintage-style '50s Jazzmaster Single-coil
Phew!
Cheers @jellybelly I'll give those Sonic Youth songs a listen, I'm not familiar with either of them.
A proper Jazzmaster also has the rhythm circuit. I like the rhythm circuit in itself, but it also is much easier for me to do that cello effect there (using my thumb) than it is on a Strat (with the pinky).
I am naturally drawn to rhythm. JMs make great rhythm guitars. And they are very versatile. Great for jazzy stuff, ambient stuff, alternative and grunge, etc etc etc. I like the way @Kuras describes it all.
And they look cool.

The big JM question is dots or block inlays

...until now. And I prefer block, so thanks for that!
