Ear Worms

What's Hot

A couple of mornings ago when I was driving home from work playing some AC-DC and attempting to sing along when I saw a guy out walking two Dalmations just as the chorus of "Rock 'n' Roll Damnation" came on.  I sang what I saw - "It's a Rock 'n' Roll Dalmation" - and then chuckled to myself at the coincidence.  The problem is that this has been stuck in my head since then and I've been walking around at work and sitting in the house singing that lyric.

There's a delivery driver at my work that is particularly prone to getting tunes stuck in his head.  I used to phone him and play a short piece of a catchy and annoying song like "Chirpy, chirpy, cheep, cheep" or the banjo/guitar duet from Deliverance, knowing it would be stuck in his head all day and drive him nuts.  I never had this "problem" until a few years ago when I started getting the chorus or part of a melody from songs stuck in my head and they would keep popping back with me even singing them.

Does anybody else have this "problem"?

"why waste your time" popped into my head about every 15 minutes all last week. No idea why, I don't listen to pop radio

Luckily, playing it on youtube seemed to act as some kind of antidote.

I always wake up (no matter how briefly) to music playing in my head. It can be anything at all, but maddeningly is usually a tune or type of music that I would never otherwise choose to listen to.

Oi, subconscious, come out & fight properly when I'm awake, you sneaky bastard!!

I have a Spotify list of powerful earworms I like. If something I don't like gets into my brain I put that on and all is solved.

^ smart move, I do this too.

I regularly get a snippet of a song stuck in my head on repeat for days or weeks at a time. Lately it’s been ‘Psycho Killer’, so maybe my brain’s trying to tell me something…?

I woke up this morning with Joni Mitchell's free man in Paris in my ear.
I have not heard it for years, how does this happen? It has been playing for 2 hours now.

I love going into work, quietly singing or whistling an ear worm song for 30s then listening as colleagues start doing the same song, sometimes hours later.  I sit there quietly thinking "I made you do that and you have no idea...  Mwah ha ha ha ha !"

I'm Mandy, Fly Me was my longest ear worm: two weeks, non-stop. Fortunately, I like the song.

Stress, I am reliably informed, is the cause.

My wife and stepson sometimes play a game whereby they will play a tune on the telly while I'm in earshot  and then see how long it takes before I'm whistling the same tune.

I don't know I've been had until I hear them both "BAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA"-ing from the other room.

It usually takes about 30 seconds max.

My wife's ringtone is from one such occasion where I began whistling the theme tune to Wallace and Gromit's The Wrong Trousers after they played it on the telly.

There is no 'H' in Aych, you know that don't you? ~ Wife

Turns out there is an H in Haych! ~ Sporky

    Bit of trading feedback here.

I constantly have the earworm problem.  The two longest-running are still tormenting me:

'Lay Down' by Mott The Hoople

    'Turn It Down' by Sweet

I managed to rid myself of 'I'll See You In My Dreams' by Bruce Springsteen a couple of months ago, but worryingly it popped up on a playlist recently and it's threatening to return...
