I can see why though someone may want to run a pair of Axe-II's together non-redundant

if the preset writing is inefficient, you can hit the cpu limit so with a pair you can either run one through the send / return of the other, which will effectively double the cpu, lengthen the fx chain and double the number of available fx available..

or run them in parallel.

in parallel you can use something external to switch between them or run them at the same time so you can tap into the more cpu costly fx [like the higher resolution reverbs etc]..

personally.. when my presets start getting close to 90% cpu I try to get creative and find a more efficient solution in the layout and control

I watched the Dweezil Zappa rig rundown, I forget the exact words but he uses two Axe FX as he said they run out of processing power for more complex sounds. In Dweezil's case this often making the sounds of quite complicated analog equipment like a Mutron Bi Phase. I guess The Edge has a similar issue.
