I'm late to this thread and sorry for repeating what others have said:

EVH Phase 90 set at 9 O'clock and the little grey button pressed in the way that sounds right.

It would have to be delay.

I can spend hours just noodling with delays and I reckon they get more hours of use than any of my other effects. My El Capistan is virtually always on.

Love a decent reverb but my favourite is overdrive.

Misread this first time round and interpreted as 'essential' effects. As far as favourite effect goes, I'd have to go with an EQ pedal and/or BBE Sonic Stomp Maximiser.  Individually (& even better together) these can change/shape your underlying tone, and add punch to cut through the mix, in a way that nothing else can.

If you are struggling to get your tone quite 'right', before spending a small fortune on pick-up and/or speaker changes, try a cheap 7-band analogue EQ and/or BBESSM - these might be all you need to crack your tone problem, and can be used with any of your guitars or amps!
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

  • I would go with the particle reverb on the zoom cdr

I'd pick reverb but I'm genuinely curious about the love for chorus. With very few exceptions (as in actual recorded examples), I think its my least favourite modulation. When I use it I just sound like a bad 80s tribute band.

Only when I'm playing Cure or Cocteaus stuff.

The second-best sound I ever got was in about 1983, when I switched on my new Boss chorus.

The best sound I ever got was in 1987, when I switched it off...

  • Usually Reverb is my favourite, but currently it's a Granular Delay (Red Panda Particle)

I'd have to go for a Leslie Simulator. A good one is a truly inspirational sound and really makes me smile when playing.

I love many others but if pushed; you can get drive sounds by cranking your amp/guitar, reverb occurs naturally in the space you play and delay is great but not really inspirational.

Phaser. I love that slightly swirly sound. Think Tom Petty's Learning to Fly. IMHO a phaser, subtly used, really helps to fill out the sound.

I don't use a lot of gain and find all I get all the 'grit' I need from the amp.

The effect I detest above all others is chorus. The horrible out-of-tune-ness is akin to scraping fingernails across a blackboard.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

    But I use delay most!

I got a Particle again recently, it's just brilliant. Instant weirdness. I stack it in Dens mode in front of a long tape delay (with a lot of repeats) and before a big plate reverb, and it sounds huge.
