Helix LT - Initial Set Up Advice Needed

What's Hot

So, initial set up question...

Does your Helix colour the sound plugged into an amp ?

I appreciate there is always adjustment and the nkering needed with digital stuff; out of the box straight into the Rambler (with no amp block) the amp is 'dulled'.

Any setup thoughts and advice ?

If you are using amp models plug into the FX return instead

No amp models mate, just a blank preset...

Do the software update first if you are not on 2.20.

Then really it is a matter of experimenting. Pick a drive pedal or 2, some modulation and see what the controls do.

If you have an FX loop then set it for the 4 cable method so you can have drive in front of your amp, and modulation / delays etc in the loop.

Guitar to Helix. Helix send to front of amp. Amp send to Helix return. Helix main out to amp return.

Then, say, put a drive pedal block, then a send / return block that your amp is in, then some delay.

    hey
presto, drive is before your preamp, delay is in the loop.

In globals make sure 1/4's are set to Line/Instrument (depends on what your loop is), make sure global EQ is off and I also unassign the main volume knob from both XLR and 1/4 (put it to USB or something) as this will set the outputs at unity.

You just have guitar helix no patch direct into amp?

Maybe check the global eq and impedance settings. There are some other guitar in settings too.

Mine does not colour my brunetti like this. I just checked.

  • Is it confirmed that the LT will operate the same way as the full fat model in this configuration (clean/no noticeable colouring)? I think Waz got the LT and the rest of you guys have the full fat

did my reply not post or did you ask this in 2 places?

Anyway, the input block has selectable input impedence. Set to 1Meg to match(ish) your amp.

If left on Auto it will model inut imped of the first block in the patch chain. Dunno what it defaults to if the patch is empty.
    Red ones are better.

LT is identical - I have one - no colouring of the amp with an empty preset

Btw, is there a mic preamp in the LT or do you need to get an external one?

No mic pre-amp in the LT

  • What's your master volume knob set at? Sounds like a gain problem

I've updated to 2.20, which has improved things considerably...

Now, to start building some presets

Glad to hear it. I remember on release people thought it was colouring the sound a bit, but it was actually just set to the wrong impedance.

Also worth switching GTR input PAD to on... It makes quite a difference.

@Wazmeister as someone who has Fractal, keeper, and now Helix, interested to here your thoughts on how Helix compares?
