It sounds like fucking Embrace. It's the musical equivalent of looking at the water bottle fridge of Foxtons in London.

    Superb description.

The drums are treated to sound like Bowie's or Lennon's depending on who did it first (I think Lennon, but could be wrong).

Perhaps thats where folks are getting the Bowie/Lennon thing from - i guess theres a bit of Isolation in there, but its not overt.

The slide guitar bits (which are fucking awful) are very much of the Verve school of dreadfulness.

Theres a lot of Radio 2 airplay of it right now, and I don't get the love.

I quite liked it when he was on Graham Norton the other day, but that might bve that it was an improvement compared to the rest of that show! I'll have another listen later to see if I can place anything. That's how I write music as well, nicking ideas but changing them slightly to make them familiar but not copied, so I tend to recognise when others do it as well (when I know the songs/artists of course).

I think what I liked in part was that it was quite an unexpected sound from him, he (or his management of course) could have played it much more safely and gone for 1D mark 2. He seemed to sing pretty well on the show but I don't know how "live" that was necessarily

That was an exceptionally poor edition of GN, it has to be said. I would have turned it off if I hadn't been interested to see what Harry Styles was like.

It was definitely live, the phrasing and pitching was a bit different from the record and he audibly clunked the mic at one point too. As far as I know the music on GN is usually live unless it's obviously being done to a backing track. Interestingly the sound has massively improved recently, it used to be terrible.

I never like Graham Norton's show, I don't think I quite get the sense of humour - reminds me of facebook humour. And that really annoying "ohhh ohhhh ohhhh" noise he always makes at the begnning of a show.

But yeah, I too only stuck with it to hear how he got on. It was more of a proper song that the crap that I keep hearing when my partner accidentally leaves the radio on in the car  (or deliberately because she knows I'll have a breakdown when I switch the car on?) which was refreshing.

I remember you saying before he looked like James Bay's cooler younger brother haha much prefer Styles to Bay on that evidence!

I don't mind it but strange that the hook and power comes from the verse, he has a great modern crooner voice but his falsetto isn't strong enough to carry off the chorus.

I quite liked his falsetto bit actually, much more than that horrid screechy noise people do these days "just because they can"

Life is too short to like Harry Styles.

I still haven't listened to the entire nose-flute canon.

When I first heard it I thought of this song from a specific movie scene, not really close but the droning piano and mood are equal

Also sounds a lot like something Lana Del Ray would do.  (Born to Die is a guilty pleasure of mine...)

Badfinger - the unluckiest band ever.  So sad ...

I rather hoped he was going to drop out of music and open a retail empire specialising in ceramic floor and wall coverings.

Not sure - it's not really at all close apart from that one line, a bit. The frustratingly familiar bit of the Harry Styles song is a bit later on.

Listening to it did unfortunately remind me how unbelievably bland Chicago were though… and I thought I liked some middle-of-the-road crap!

In the Terry Kath days they were heavy blues with horns - quite radical in a small way and they even went through an experimental jazz stage. But it was the very bland stuff that sold. I watched something about them, might have been on Sky Arts a few years ago, and they had this very long history and seemed to be shockingly good musicians.

Just gave it a listen... it's a cross between Imagine by John Lennon and Come  back to what you know by Embrace
