Honestly, it would have to be this. Yes it's live but I think it qualifies as Weld is one of his most popular albums. Such a visceral tone. Try getting that with your Helix's, motherfuckers!

That might take all of 30 seconds to recreate. :)

For me, it's the opening for this. It epitomized the sound of the grunge tone for me, and just gets me quivering!

My nomination - Stevie Ray here (1.40 on for solo) and I'm told it was a Strat into a cranked brown Vibroverb.

If I could ape one tone it would be this:

I love Bowie with white gloves on trying to pretend he's SRV at the end in the vid.

In a similar vein, I love this. Thornley's solo at around 2:28 is blistering. Not saying it's the best ever, just wish I could go out and sound like that most Friday and Saturday nights.

Off the top of my head it's the rhythm tone on the verses on this. Stellar sound on VHII imo.

Ok, following on from @dindude 's excellent clean thread...tonez....

The greatest single tone you've heard on a record?

This is obviously a YMMV thread as tonez are different for different people.

a lot to choose from for obvious reasons - but I won't disagree with your thoughts - I have big memories of this - No really a Bowie fan, but remember hearing this track in a bar for the first time and some girl raving about this new Bowie album - I thought okay, but nothing special - Then that guitar solo and that sound at 1.49 - Made my hairs on my neck stand up and I thought what the 'eck is that and who the 'eck is it - did not know who SRV was then - So boy what an impact - That one note at 1.49 is all you need to know

A great lead tone that cuts through the busy arrangement

Clearly one man's grunge is another man's staid middle of the road filler... At the risk of digressing, the one band who epitomize grunge (and are still going strong) are:

Mind you a proper grunge band wouldn't give two flying f*cks about 'tone'.

Love the intro tone on this, always will be my favourite hard rock tone.

And for a more Vintage Rock tone, it doesn't get any better than Paperback Writer. Couldn't find a vid on youtube with the authentic version/tone so had to put up a Dailymotion link.

Not sure if this was a cranked amp or early type of Treble Boost pedal (or both), I'd guess amp, but I'd love to know what he used, bith Guitar and Amp.....Gibson with AC30 Cranked???

I'm a sucker for old Blues/R&B Got to appreciate Guitar Slim. Listen to this solo at around 1.40, The first distorted guitar on record? from 1954. Big influence on Zappa. That solo is well nasty!
