12 Years A Slave is probably the best.

Honourable mentions to The Theory Of Everything, Grand Budapest Hotel and Rogue One, all of which I've got on DVD having seen them at the cinema.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

A film that had stayed with me for the past couple of years, for the performances and theme is 'Take Shelter'.

Incredible central performance from Michael Shannon, I loved the unsettling tension and analogous script.

A real slow burner but I keep thinking back on it.

Midnight Special, genuinely the best Earth based sci-fi since Close Encounters.

Really enjoyed Straight Outta Compton and i'm not a big fan of rap music!

Kill The Irishman, i can't believe that Tara Reid has a hand in this, its so bloody good!

I didn't really rate Kingsmen, infact i fell asleep watching it, twice!

  • Guardians of the Galaxy - very entertaining.

The Hunt - quite unnerving in it's depiction of something that likely happens more often than we may know of.

Sharknado IV - Simply for the "radioactive-nado", and Tara Reid ;)

Carol by Todd Haynes. Low key film, beautifully composed and shot and excellent performances by Blanchett and Mara. Had a really moving final shot, kinda like an emotional counterpoint to the last shot of Brokeback Mountain.

Arrival - an incredible adaption of the brilliant novella: "Story Of Your Life" by Ted Chiang

Hector. I really thought it pretty profound and touching. Am I being corny?

Really? I'd have nominated that as turkey of the decade. Dreadful film.

If you've not seen 'Far From Heaven' it's a great film worth watching from the same director.

Been some really great horror films released in the last few years, which have broken out of the "found footage" rut the genre has been in for a while...

    The Witch
    It Follows
    The Babadook
    Get Out

..i would agree with all those and add 'Dont breathe'.

@TheMarlin pretty sure most of those films you mentioned are way more than 3 yrs old.

Surprised by the love for Kingsmen , it's okay but if that's the best film of the last three years perhaps I should read more.

Having said that pretty much everything that came to mind for me is older than that so maybe it was unamused

Honourable mentions for Logan as rising above the majority of super hero films ( despite being a Marvel obsessive in my youth I've generally found them to be disappointing), Whiplash for the performances and Amy for a well made documentary.
Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

Yes, I forgot Whiplash, great film.  So much so that it actually persuaded me to watch a musical i.e. La La Land... which was OK.

  • Django Unchained. Hateful Eight was also very good.

Hell or High Water was another stand out film for me.
