Not that obscure at the time:
    Slowdive - Souvlaki
    Ride - Nowhere
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation + Goo
    DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Joy Division - Les Bain Douches
The Avalanches - Since I Left You (my definition of a perfect album)
Psychocandy - The Jesus and Mary Chain
    White Stripes - S/T
    The Cure - Seventeen Seconds

    Obscure at the time:
William Onyeabor - Anything You Sow
Joe King Kologbo - Sugar Daddy
James Chance and the Contortions - Buy (technically 79, but I needed to post this thing)

And obviously Radiohead, Nirvana, The Smiths, New Order, MBV etc. as well as a tonne of other stuff I will have forgotten about
    Stop crying, start buying

    Frank Zappa:
any of the 'You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore' double live albums (six in all)
    You Are What You Is
    Them or Us
Does Humor Belong in Music? - great starter compilation
Guitar - a double album of Frank's solos

    Talking Heads Stop Making Sense

    SRVTexas Flood

    David Gilmour About Face

Plenty more from those 20 years ... including some albums from some Jazz Fusion orientated guitarists not often mentioned on these threads such as John Scofield, Stanley Jordan, Pat Metheny, Lee Ritenour, Al di Meola. Maybe there's a little corner of Fretboard that holds these guys in high regard and can recommend a specific album ...

Don't know if theyre really forgotten but these get my vote

Crowbar self titled and Odd Fellows Rest.
    Down - NOLA.
RATM - Evil Empire. Definitely not forgotten but everyone always talks about the self titled whereas I think this had a much rawer heavier sound. The covers album had some massive riffs on it too, Maggies Farm for instance.
