its a late 2012 model, Im pretty sure it comes to bits as Ive looked into upgrading before.

I dont mind doing the mechanical bit..its the software transfer stuff that puts me off....plus I want to add it to whats there now, not replace ...any advice?

Back up what you have on to an external drive, download Sierra or whatever OS install onto a memory stick, plug memory stick into Mac mini with new HD, boot from said memory stick, install OS, then use migration assistant to transfer stuff from back up

So will that put the OS on the SSD, and I keep everything else on the existing HD ?

You can clone the current drive to the new drive using disk utility then resize the partition if the old drive is smaller

Mmm...the existing HD is 1 TB, ...

Go clean install and buy a caddie for the old drive - transfer across at your leisure!
