I've tentatively dipped my toe into the recording malarky and am quite enjoying the Celestion G65 4x12 IRs.

  • @Clarky .... any further updates on how you're getting along with the Helix?  As you're a 'power user' of modelling stuff, it's fascinating to read about your experiences with the Helix. :-)

    nothing earth shattering to report..
I've been trying various ways of creating my 'difficult' preset but keep running out of horsepower..

I think it's time for a slightly different approach
play every note as if it were your first

Thanks for the update. Good luck with the different approach.

I'm going to try to break up my big preset that don't fit into the Helix into 2 different presets
riff / solo morphs to a pad
clean / solo morphs to a pad

this is how I used to handle this in the VG-99 and in the Axe-FX prior to scenes being introduced..

the riff / clean / solo morphs to clean-ish preset that I've created in the Helix so far need to be somehow made more efficient so I can squeeze in a phaser..
this will take a little creative thinking to figure out how to do it..

    Semi seriously though
I've considered it. £99 a vst host and a MacBook
do all the amp and cab modelling in the mac and all the FX on the floor ..

For me, the Helix *is* the computer.

I've considered using a computer live many times, but have never had anything with the usability to actually do it.

now I know I'm going to sound like a complete tosser / fanboi.. etc..
    I hope not though

if you're a big preamp / multi-fx user for all your tone needs [so I'm not including 4CM]
the Axe-FX sets the bar so high that everything else feels like a step backwards..
so I all honesty I'm finding this a big tough
play every note as if it were your first

  • Hmm, well I'll still demo Helix Native, it'd be very convenient and it has some cool bass gear the Axe FX doesn't model. But I'm yet to be convinced the core high gain sounds I go for will be as good as the Fractal. It may well be a taste thing, but it's been consistent for me through all tests including the one I was involved with that Drew put together.

I keep considering the Fractal reverb plugin, the reverbs in the Axe FX 2 are great. But I have reverbs I like already. The price does seem to be coming down though, last I saw it about 100 dollars, it's now $79.99 https://shop.fractalaudio.com/FAS_FX_Reverb_Plugin_p/fas-804-0001.htm

after a bit of a head-scratch regarding "how to claw back some DSP horsepower"
I'm going to try to build everything I need with only 2 amps and a ton on control stuff going on..
this will mean trying to manipulate a hi-gain amp into giving me a nice full bodied clean tone..

let's see how many hoops I can get this box to jump through...
play every note as if it were your first

  • When does your trial run out? You've had a it a while, haven't you?

    Good luck with it :-)

I agree with the comments so far, I'm really enjoying the Helix, it has some great features and promises a long term future in my home rehearsal setup but the amp modelling isn't as realistic as the AxFXII or even the Ax8 which I'll continue to use in my live rig.

The modelling in the Axe FX 2 and AX8 is identical

I prefer the Helix amp modelling, FWIW.

  • Well, assuming there's a demo of Native as soon as it is released I'm looking forward to having a go.  Got to say though the Fractal 6505/+ models are some of my favourite amp sounds for recording for any amp I've used, though I haven't ever owned a load box.

That surprises me. As someone who has spent a long time with both units I can clearly hear the superior sound in the Fractal. Given your background I didn't expect you to have that opinion. Hope that doesn't offend.
