  • If it is definitely a ‘74, it’s quite rare. The LP Standard with full sized HBs was only reintroduced in ‘76 - but was available as a special order prior.

  • Thanks Richard. Original imho.

Pickup cavities original and untampered, so def not a messed up deluxe.
Serial number stamped and starts with a 1 and then the pots match up.
The pups are the correct patent numbers for the age and unsoldered to the vol pots.

I’m certainly not suggesting it’s been modified - you can tell from your photo they’re factory routes. I’d imagine they shipped very few special orders in the 70s, so a genuinely rare guitar.

  • @richardhomer ; - sshhhh!! we don't want the asking price to go up!

Seriously if this is a '74 i've always fancied a birth year guitar. What is the neck profile like on these? did they suffer from the   narrower nut widths like the SG's of the time? Does it also have the original case? Tuners are later schallers?

    Haha. I wouldn't do that, honest :-)

The neck is really comfy - I'd say it's wide but mid. Def not narrow and thin as with old 335s and def not fat, as per R8s etc.

Schaller tuners but could be changed back and none original black Gibson style hard case.

Gibson shipped 28 Les Pauls with humbuckers in 1974.

It's from memory, but I have it in the back of a book somewhere. I only remember the figure because I was looking at buying a '74 Les Paul with humbuckers at one point. They produced a lot more in '73, but still less than 200. From memory, some of these still went out with Deluxe on the truss-rod cover despite the humbuckers.

Actually, this stat may not be correct. These 28 guitars are actually Deluxes with humbucking pickups. The link above states that Gibson shipped 2,218 Les Paul Standards before the Standard was officially reintroduced in 1976. I guess that stat was gleaned from this book:

    Thanks - really interesting.

    Worth noting...

Wide binding in the cutaway - I noticed that on mine, as I'd never seen this before on a Les Paul.

Shallow angle neck and small volute.

It's got the 3 piece pancake body.

The one difference on mine is that it has a four piece top and not three piece.

Strange that it was officially introduced in 1976, albeit with a different spec and build (which is what all the records online say too) but they only shipped 24 units in that year, before 5946 in 1978.

  • The laugh for me, with this, is that it's priced cheaper than a lot of newish standards and 335s.
