Subbing this thread in the hope that whatever comes out as the consensus is available in lots of bright colours for my blue RG.

@Sporky How on earth did you end up with a set of Zakk-Wylde-flavoured pickups?

Dam shame they seem to have stopped selling them now but the Tesla Vr-Extreme pups are/were great for the £35 a piece they used to sell for, worth keeping an eye out for a set

  • Alternatively, use any humbucker and turn up amp preamp gain and treble control 2 notches from where they were ;)
I'm always looking for interesting USA Hamers for sale.

At the moment I'm looking for:
    * Hamer Watson, SS2, Vintage S, T62.
    * Music Man Luke 1, Luke II

    Please drop me a message.

Hmmm..   I like the Gibson 496r and 500T ceramic twins and have them on my Classic...   Think 80s rock..  The Slash sound...   Or the Dirty Fingers...

Compared (relatively) with Gibsons other pickups.

Dimarzio FRED, Bill Lawrence (bill & becky) L500XL or Bulldog Hot PAF have all served me well in the past for high gain lead stuff.

Black covers (a few chips for rock 'n' roll authenticity), zebra underneath, £139ish.

I was young(er) and didn't need the money (as much as I do now). :)

Ah. The old compulsive buying/hoarding habit. :)

(Obviously nothing to do with the fact that they have slick black covers with no pole pieces visible without actually needing batteries like EMGs)

  • Batteries really aren't a big issue with EMGs, they last about a year for a normal set (or less if you use active EQ/X-Series etc).  The tone is quite different though which is why I'm not sure they're the outright best choice for searing solos - same goes for the Blackouts actually, even though they have more dynamic range than typical EMGs they're still not as in your face as a hot passive.

You have to pull the jack out though, right? Otherwise the battery goes flat?
0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • Yes you have to remove the jack. The battery is connected every time something is plugged in, so removing is necessary to not run the battery down.

That's not an issue for me anyway as I have to remove the jack to put the guitar on my rack.

Last night I was watching very expensive Z.Vex pedal demos on YT. One of them did exactly the same gated effect my one active guitar produces when I've let the 9v go flat by leaving the cable in. My Rockstand will take my RGs with the lead still in.

  • Was it the Mastotron?  I have one of those, and it can do that sound - if I'm thinking of the right sound.

I can't remember. The vid was this one, which was very cool:

I want all three of those theramin-plated thingies, but I'm too stupid to use my feet while playing. :(
