I have a 1996 Gold Top Limited Edition which has checked like crazy all over.

The lacquer keeps falling off my 2012 goldtop even though I rarely use the metal pick I was given by a friend
    :)

I think the thickness of finish as well as the formulation plays it's part. Then temperature and humidity will do it's thing. I've had a 2006 ES335 from new and the thicker gloop finish has no signs of 'checking' or much in the way of scratches. It does get treated to not being left in vehicles when its particulary hot or cold or anytime really, and stays in its case when not being played.

I think you might be right about the thickness. I had a Studio refinished in nitro but asked for a thin finish so it would age quicker and within 3 months it had checked. Looked fantastic actually. My 1995 Standard has no checking and although it's in excellent overall condition, it's been well gigged.
