Sorry yes, my comment was around resistance, not actual output... back to it being a silly measurement.

i am sure I remember Tim saying he only included it in the spec because it was expected

my understanding is the wind will vary based on the resistance of the spool of wire used in order to get consistency out of an inconsistent material

I do notice people interchanging DCR and Output in this thread. Those are two different things.

I will never ever sell anything on Ebay.

Not that I would ever misrepresent or sell faulty goods knowingly but when I sell on Gumtree, I know it's buyer beware and no returns.

No - think it is more likely that the wind in terms of number of turns and pattern of wind/turns per layer will stay the same and the DC resistance is less consequential than the other factors, but if a gauge of wire was found to be winding under or over by much in terms of resistance it would be taken out of service, or saved for something special where an in-between gauge may be useful.
So if you found that some AWG was under size (higher resistance per length) it may be used as something in -between AWG42 and AWG43, maybe even coming in under the metric size  that sits between those two (often called AWG42.5, which is used for Cold Sweat Neck/Black Dog and Rebel Yell neck)

Just for reference, I just swapped a Duncan Invader for a DiMarzio PAF in a friend's guitar. Despite the 2:1 difference in DC resistance, there was almost *no* audible difference in output - and less than we expected in tone as well, although that was still noticeable.

Basically you have no idea what the output will be from the DC resistance alone.

As a matter of interest how much are they going for?
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

Totally agree. I'd rather throw the pickups in a skip than deal with this kind of shit.

There is a skip outside my house if you ever need to get rid of anything  :)

Well it’s been 5 years and 2 kids since I last thought that much in depth about it, so I am happy to be wrong in the way BKP use the wire gradings

But your response confirms I am not misremembering that they grade the wire according to actual readings of the spool itself, not just the stated AWG.

This has been really interesting reading.

Why don’t BKP label their stuff?

maybe this forum needs a specific ebay issues/problems/hacks/etc thread.
to pool knowledge, wisdom, tricks, and to keep occasional rants and gripes within a defined space.
both sides cheek by jowl so people can compare and contrast experiences and (potentially) make sense of how to get the best from it.

  • I'm wondering now if mine is actually a stormy monday and not a mule... what are the differences between A2 and A4 magnets? Sorry to go off track a bit!

  • I actually think this has turned into a reasonably useful thread.

I've learned never to sell pups on ebay unless I quote the exact measurement (buying a multimeter) or to distance myself away from or caveat the manufacturer website specs, which possibly have a tolerance.

    I still don't have a clue about output v resistance though :-)

I thought "no returns" meant exactly that? My takeaway from this is never sell on eBay and be selective about the quality/sanity of buyers.

Just to illustrate the potential differences between two pups... these are both the same middle pickup from two “identical” fender cs sets (don’t ask which, can’t remember)...

Ah, but the one on the left looks like it's in direct sunlight and the one on the right looks like it's in the shade... call that a scientific test?  ;-)

It means no returns if the buyer just changes their mind. But if the buyer says the item is faulty or not as described they are eligible for a refund. eBay will pretty much always side with the buyer where there’s any doubt.

Just to throw a spanner in the works... both pics were taken last night... no sunlight involved!... :)
