Solution suggestions please ...

What's Hot
I'm putting an LP-alike together.

The problem is that I seem to have put the hole for the jack socket too close to the tone pot that's closest to the edge of the body (ie what would normally be the bridge tone pot). So, if I put a lead into the jack socket, the tip of the lead hits the side of the tone pot.

D'oh.

The options I've thought of so far are;
  1. redrill the hole for the jack socket in a more appropriate position, and blank off the redundant hole somehow.
  2. Go to a 2vol / 1tone configuration and put something (a dummy knob?) in place of the removed tone pot.
  3. as 2, but fit a kill switch or blower switch in place of the removed tone control
Any other brighter ideas??

Side rout a jack hole and use the spare hole for a mini dpdt and use it for serial/parallel or coil split?

    Or just stick to basses?

Would using a mini pot with 16mm dia body provide enough clearance?

    Actually, it might!

Why did I think of complicated solutions, when there was a much simpler option ...

Will it still foul a mini pot or a switch in the tone pot location?

if so I would look to change the angle of the jack socket be recessing in some way.  Route from the back of the guitar leave the front alone.  You can do a lot without touching the outline from the front at all

This idea, but probably a more subtle angle

    That'd should be do-able too.

Thanks guys - that's two options in 10mins, both better than I'd come up with in the last 4 hours of thinking about it!!

There are some beautiful design touches on that Sabre @wezV.

Here's a third, for what it's worth... rout out the existing hole to an oval, then use a Strat jack plate, set into a shallow oval recess to preserve body outline. The angle of the jack should keep it away from the pot.

Or simply make a new jack plate with the hole off-centre.

I would be amazed if the combination of a mini-pot and one of these ideas doesn’t work.

Make a custom jack plate for two jacks so they go either side of the pot. Say you always wanted to do a stereo output.
Can't sing, can't dance, can handle a guitar a little.

And the simplest answer is the winner!

Just dug a mini pot out of a drawer, and it'll fit.

Now I just need to order a long shaft, 500k, Linear taper mini pot, and I'm good to go.  No matter how much I plan things out at the beginning, and put all the necessary pieces in a build-box, there's always something right at the end that gets me!

Some nice ideas in the other suggestions.  PArticularly like that Sabre with the rear mounted jack socket.

My suggestion came out of finding myself in a similar situation earlier this year when I could not make a full-size pot fit. That's another occasion when a mini pot saved the day. Glad it worked out for you too :)

Am I the only one whose first thought was just "a bit a electrical tape around the edge of the tone pot?

(obviously only a solution if the issue is one of electrical contact rather than jack-physically-not-going-in)

Don't you need a log pot for a tone control?

What plate are you mounting the jack onto?
I discovered that I ran into problems if I wasn't careful and used Electrosockets - like a recessed tele cup , easily rectified by using the flat metal plate like a LP has.

I moved the socket location on later models and used electrosockets again
