Thanks all for the help, great stuff.

FWIW my favourite guitarist is John Mayer, especially his bluesy and mildly jazzy stuff - so that’s probably a good feel for the sort of tones I’m after.

If anyone has any recommendations on particular pedals then I’m all ears!

    I think, therefore.... I... ummmm........

  • Try a  2nd hand zoom multistomp. It will give  you a flavour of various fx pedals. And then start you on the never ending path of pedal buying/chasing tone ....  ;) enjoy the ride....

  • At sensible bedroom levels I love experimenting with just the DMM on it's own through a Princeton. Fascinating pedal and so many sounds

Was going to say a Line 6 M5 for the same reason. The only drawback is that you can't try the different "pedals" in combination, but it does give a good idea of different sounds - and all for the price of one or two "proper" pedals. Plus you can move it on when you're done and get your money back.

  • I'd start with a cheap multi fx pedal like the line 6 m5 or the zoom thing.
It gives you an idea of what you like without costing a small fortune and adding complications like power supplies and patch cables.
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Thanks guys. I actually spent quite a long time playing around in amplitude getting a feel for different effects so I think I’ve got a reasonableness handle on what I actually want to get sound wise - more of just how to achieve it I guess.

I grabbed the Simble as I’ve been wanting to scratch that itch for ages and picked up a cheapo Ibanez analog delay mini pedal so excited to assemble my first little board! No doubt it’ll be tinkered with and changed (grown!) - I’m down a rabbit hole now :D

The always on pedals at home at the moment are a HOF mini reverb and a klon type pedal (Mayer is a famous user of this type of pedal...). The Tone City Bad Horse is a well regarded affordable mini klon pedal.

Also I can't recommend a pedal tuner enough. The TU3 is also an awesome buffer.
Thanks will look into them! What’s the benefit of a pedal tuner instead of clip on at home out of interest? With only room for 3-4 pedals i just want to try and make the best use of the space!
    If you're using mini pedals you'll get a lot more than that on a Nano+. I've done a Boss board on a Nano+ and squeezed five pedals on there  (TU-2, TW-1, OD-1X, PH-2, DW-2W).

My other Nano+ board is all small pedals. Zvex Channel 2, TS mini, EHX crayon, Mooer Ninety Orange, Ibanez mini delay, Ditto Stereo. And you could get another one on if the Ditto was the mono version.  Surprisingly capacious!

Assuming the Blues Cube Hot has an fx loop, I would budget for some extra cables so that you can place the looper in the amp's fx loop. This would enable you to adjust various levels of amp drive (as well as eq settings) as you build up layers on the looper. It's a great way of learning how to dial in different guitar sounds to compliment each other rather than clash.

If you get a delay (I'd recommend a TC Flashback as they cover a lot of ground very well) that can go in the loop as well, so that it's after any amp drive (after tends to be clearer and, I think, most players prefer it this way though before drive does have it's sound). Depending how the Blues Cube's loop is designed, you may find you can vary the amp reverb on different looper layers as well.

Modulation effects can go before the amp or in the loop - personally I like them before but the majority of players would probably go in the loop (and therefore after the amp's drive).

Another suggestion might be another flavour of drive (if the ts and amp drive don't cover enough options) which, again, can be of benefit when building up a piece on a looper. Something less mid-boosted than the tube screamer such as a Boss Blues Driver or similar might work well.

  • a coffee pedal. you stomp on it and a cup of fresh coffee appers so you don't have to get up and make one. that would be a most excellent addition to any pedal board.

Just short cut the whole pedal buying process. Get a Helix or Axe FX. And then work down from there. ;-)
