If you've ever found yourself listening to mk.2 era Purple and wishing there was more (like, a lot more) of Ian Gillan squealing, this is the album for you.
That's true, but the 'monkey vocals' in Strange Kind Of Woman are both hilarious and brilliant at the same time - I never get tired of it :).

Is that the bit where Gillan and Blackmore are "trading licks"?

I'd find it funnier if I thought they thought it was funny, but I get the feeling they didn't.

Don't talk politics and don't throw stones. Your royal highnesses.

  • Most things with "Fillmore" in the title.

+1's for Live at Leeds and If You Want Blood.

Forgot about this one! Shame that there isn't a more complete recording available in the archives of the 3 shows they used to make this album. The BBC Live set from 1972 is a great listen too.

If you like ferocious renditions of complex melodic pieces, I can recommend National Health - Playtime.

It was released as an Archive issue a few years back. Comprised of two live gigs, first in Paris, second in USA - it's the USA half that really shows what this line up could do. Absolutely one of the most full on, aggressive, free-form live sets I have a recording of.

As one progarchives reviewer put it: "High Art played with a Vengence"

Here's a sample John Greaves Number "Squarer for Maude"........give it time to build .....

Rory’s Irish Tour 74 DVD is excellent as well as Rory Live at Montreux. I’m in a Rory phase at the moment :D

Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band: Live 1975-1985. Technically its a compilation album rather than a recording of a gig, but some blindingly good stuff on there all the same.

His Live In Dublin with the Sessions Band was good too.

For something more guitar,  Jimi Hendrix Experience - Live at Winterland. Not feted quite so much as the Woodstock, Isle of Wight or Monterrey recordings, but for me I always preferred this one for some reason. My favourite performances of both Red House and Hey Joe are on there.

Bob Marley's Live at the Lyceum is a great album. I haven't heard it for years though as I only ever had it on tape.
    Nirvana Unplugged is also great.
As it Townes Van Zandt's Live at the Old Quarter.
Stand in the Fire by Warren Zevon is damn fine too.
Can't sing, can't dance, can handle a guitar a little.
