What do you call....

The cover that goes over a single fret so that you can use wire wool without destroying the fretboard itself

They were sold originally as eraser guards for technical drawing, I believe.

I've not yet needed to replace mine, so not had an opportunity to see if they're sold any cheaper under their previous guise.

If you are using wire wool which may destroy the board, you are using the wrong wire wool.

Crimson Guitars now do some abrasive rubbers - far far easier and less mess than wire wool for polishing frets.

I’d second the Crimson rubbers (even though I haven’t used them) simply because wire wool is evil.

Ben uses them in a video in which refrets kelly Jones’s SG.

    +1

I use masking tape either side of the fret to protect the fingerboard, but then, when cleaning up the end of frets, I remove the masking tape and clean the fingerboard up at the same time with the wire wool.

  • The Crimson rubbers are handy, but it's hard to beat wet&dry sandpaper. I don't like wire wool due to the way it showers conductive metal particles everywhere.

  • Micromesh was recommended to me recently, it is also worth a go.  Less mess than wirewool, will cost more though

I use those too, but still use wire wool.

tbh, the last few fret jobs I have done have been a combination of wet and dry up to 1200g, micromesh up to 4000g, liberon 0000 wire wool, then micro micromesh again up to 12000g.   I have used the crimson rubbers in there too, but they have not found a permanent place in my method yet.  I often finish with a tiny amount of T-cut on a microfibre cloth.

They are all good for certain stages

I use micromesh exclusively for frets, but I swear by cheap blue masking tape to cover the entire board, it's amazing what shite the tape gets out of the grain on a dirty rosewood board, gets it ready for a good toothbrushing and oiling.

Hehe he said like "rubbers" heheheh.

What with the fingertip rubber protectors and this thread, I think the FB has gone all BDSM and stuff.
