I did the same in a hotel and also worked in a pizza shop building pizzas and washing up many moons ago

Either a "do what you have to, to survive go-getter" or "desperate". I'd say the former, as the part-time and temporary nature of the work would suit a student and as it's hardly intellectual brain-bashing work he has time to think about his studies while he's doing it and isn't wasting his brain cells in the service of an employer and then making himself too tired to concentrate on lectures and course work.

If he were a graduate I'd suggest the latter.
