Overcoming Buckle rash

What's Hot

One of the things that annoys me most about playing guitar is the inevitable 'buckle rash' caused by belt buckles scratching the back of the guitar.
Having looked around online a few years ago I came across Musicians Belt (http://www.musiciansbelt.com/) and bought one of the weave belts. It's great, and I may buy another, but there are times when my outfit doesn't warrant it or I simply want to wear a proper belt.

I know the answer of "don't wear a belt" but other than that, how do people avoid damaging the back of their guitars?

I know a chap who tucks a cloth duster down the front of his trousers so that it hangs over his belt buckle.

Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

  • Pull out my t-shirt over the front of the buckle and tuck it under the buckle. Or take my belt off for playing somebody else's guitar.

Not a problem these days as I never tuck my shirt/T Shirt in.

If 80's fashions come back then not sure.

Wear the guitar higher up. "Above the dick or below the dick, never over the dick" (dean ween paraphrasing one of his early teachers)

Go punk and wear your belt so the buckle is at your side rather than over the fly!

Simple yet effective, and stylish to boot.

Its also free and you can turn it back after playing.

I don't care - its only paint. I treat it as part of the ageing of the instrument.

You used to be able to buy stick on pads that protected the back of the guitar but dunno if they are still available.

I'm less bothered about my electrics, more the acoustics

  • Get tighter jeans that don’t need a belt. Or eat more so you don’t need a belt with your current ones.

Angle your codpiece slightly upward so it protrudes into the back of the guitar and sort of props it up away from your massive Harley Davidson belt buckle.

    Some useful suggestions:

    Wear spandex

    Or sportswear

Or hitch your guitar up and wear nothing at all

Or only ever play guitar in your bedroom

I don’t wear a belt, and I always untucked my tea shirt to play, back when I used to wear it tucked in. I’ve never accepted ‘buckle rash’ as inevitable, and I’d honestly struggle to consider buying a guitar in that condition. I did buy one with some worming to the rear, but nothing through the finish, and even that upsets me a bit.. Takes all sorts, I suppose.. =)
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Get a beer belly and rest the guitar back on that. That way the buckle is under the podge out of the way.
Or wear the buckle to the side.
Or cover the buckle with a bar towel or similar.
Or get a buckle thats a virgin and can't give you a rash.

It gives me the shudders watching people play guitars with big lumpy watches and metal straps, rings, leather zippy jackets etc. Still it's there guitar and they won't do it with mine.
