Dissecting a solo.

I'm trying to learn a Brad Paisley solo but can't find any sort of tab for it or any video attempting it on youtube.

Whilst Ideally I would like to break it down and try to learn it by ear. For me it's pretty impossible. any tips here?

Do you know the chords? And the scale it should be in?

Its just a case of going a note at a time, build up a phrase, and make sure you’re playing it correctly against the original.

Knowing the key and the chords you’re playing over will narrow down the potential notes a lot.

If you have the song and a DAW you can loop specific sections until you’ve got it down. There’s probably specific software for this that will let you slow it down but I’m not familiar with it.

As above and try and sing some of the phrases too, that'll really get them in your ear. Additionally, YouTube now has a slightly crude slow down feature that works well enough. For something more flexible and comprehensive there is Transcribe. 

The more you do this the better you ear will get.

There are a few Brad Paisley music/tab books available (just search on Amazon) - you might find the song there.

On YouTube, have you searched Country Guitar Chops (Ken Carlson)? You can sign up for free material from his website, plus he sells video lessons and song breakdowns. I have to say he's not 100% accurate (though neither am I!) but useful anyway. Plus he has a great porn star 'tache!

What's the song? I wouldn't mind having a look at it myself.

It's the solo from Last time for everything. It's got a bit of everything in it really.

Break down the phrases and try to align them with whatever chord they're being played over, and split the bar into 4 beats (assuming its in 4/4) then you can get accents, off-beats and any pauses in the right place.

Justin Sandercoe has a brilliant ear training / intervals course available for free on his website. Would be worth looking at if you are planning on doing a lot of transcribing.

well, first up... what solo is it? I've learned a ton of them!

Aside from that - you NEED this software - I transcribe for a living and it makes my job possible.

I don't have that album so just listened to it on YouTube. I thinkI'll have a go at transcribing that - it's made slightly easier by the fact that you can actually see where he's putting his fingers at times (especially handy in the tapping bit). I use capo (on my Mac) but even if if you don't have special software, you can slow down the YouTube playback in the settings (cog symbol to bottom right of the screen).
