Always On Booster

What do you use as an always on boost/preamp pedal? I've been considering using an OD set to low gain or possibly an EQ pedal?

Xotic EP booster works well for this application.

If a booster is always on, is it still considered boosting?

MXR Custom Shop Micro Amp - I cut the bass and boost the treble a touch.

I use a Diamond Compresser as an always on booster.

I leave my Xotic EP Boost on all the time when using my Robert Cray Strat just to beef it up a bit and I used to do a similar thing with an RC Booster, but that was on any guitar. I occasionally do the same with a Way Huge Pork Loin.

The one pedal I leave on regardless of guitar is my Keeley Compressor. It's doing what it's meant to but with the level slightly up, it adds a lift and push compared to the straight, amp volume

You might like a Mosky XP Boost - allegedly a clone of the EP Boost. Cheap as chips. I don't know how true the EP Boost clone suggestion really is cos I've never tried an EP boost, but this has (apparently) the same dip switches inside and they do have an effect if you change them.

Anyway - at unity gain it gives a pleasing tonal change to my usual signal into the amp. It's more than just the fact it becomes a buffer - I used to have a transparent Wobo buffer at one point and that didn't change the tone, so I'm happy the pedal adds a bit of colour. Turn it up past unity and it adds more level to your signal in a fairly standard way - which means how that sounds to you will depend on what you're running that signal into next.

I use a @handsomerik built Madbean Fatpants - sort of an EP boost with a full range booster built in. It sounds great with my Strat as well as my LP... I'd have to rethink everything if it got taken away.

  • Going to get some lols here but it’s the RYRA again. Brilliant as a boost but also brilliant as an always on pedal... I’ve got the gain set to about 10/11 o’clock it really thickens things up nicely without overtaking overall tone

  • However I’m still tempted to try out an EP booster again at somepoint

  • This thread reminds me that I really should get my old Dod Bifet pre-amp out of its box and play around with it again.  That's ones always on because it doesn't even have a footswitches on it.

EP Booster in the chain - not in the loop - love the sound it adds and glad it's in the Helix now :)

I have an "Epic Boost" from fuzzdog. I think the first two letters of the name give an idea of what this is based on. excellent pedal.

I have one of these, it's a great pedal when it's on - the bypass tone sounds a bit cloudy though.
