How about a '53 Tele that was altered so much that they restored it with complete new veneers both front and back?
Not even vintage instruments with world famous former owners are immune from this sort of abuse.

Jaco Pastorius' number one defretted bass got veneered.

Mike Bloomfield's Telecaster was modified to left-handed - complete with second upper bout cutaway.

I cannot remember what was done to James Jamerson's number one Precision Bass. (It got stolen. I cannot recall whether it has since resurfaced?)

Jamerson's main P-bass has never resurfaced and sadly, since James Junior died, if it did show up, there is now nobody that could authenticate it - only he knew exactly how the letters carved on the heel looked.

There's a huge thread on Talkbass if you're into memorising tortoiseshell patterns like I am er, like a friend of mine is.

Someone was selling a claimed JJ bass a year or two ago, saying it was a gift in the '60s, and the main archive pic they used actually showed a different instrument... it had a hootenanny strap, but the bass for sale had no screw hole. Bonkers.

The Tele probably looked something like this before the reconstruction...

Only Linc Chamberland's (who he?) biggest fan.

Linc Chamberland was a great Unknown Jazz Tele player. Apparently...............

Linc Chamberland playing 'Have you met Miss Jones', amazing technique.
