5% overwound pickups

Would you say that 5% extra winding in a humbucker pickup would make much of a difference really?

Not when the wind only contributes about 50% to the overall sound of the pickup.

Sometimes I just feel it's marketing bullshit preying on our tone quests etc :(

I don't have anything to gain by lying about it. Why would you believe one of the two variables that go into the tone creation of a pickup won't cause a tonal change when changed?

No one who's got experience is going to say a 8K pickup sounds like an 8.6k pickup (which is approximately 5% more winds).

So it does make a difference? More hot?

I think it's more of a tone change rather than output per se as that is quite dependent on pickup height. I've an old Schaller that's only about 7.5k in resistance but blows what are supposedly hotter pickups out of the water.

I have a BK Sinner simgle coil at the bridge in one of my Strats, listed at 21.5k (!) it's nothing like those figures suggest...it's everything a trad Strat bridge pickup isn't, which is why I like it!

So it's not even a guitar pickup? Weird to have that in there...

A 5% increase in output will be inaudible, however as a pickup is a resonant circuit, so it's possible that the resonant peak will have changed.

    Yes it makes a difference.

Higher output, drives an amp into distortion earlier, more compression, a fuller mid range and attenuated treble. I'd say 5% is probably about the minimal level where you'd notice the change, so it wouldn't be significant. But as I said before, noticeable.

Dumb but necessary question: Is the overwinding percentage an expression of the increase in d.c. resistance or of the number of turns around the bobbin?

You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

I'm assuming as it's overwinding  we're relating it to the wind count
