A new fanned fret, a bit less vintage than recent builds

Looks great Wez.  Did Nath not want side dots (or are they just not showing in the picture).  It he didn't, I'm very impressed with no markings on the neck and it being a fanned fret, though I'm learning that the best thing is to not look at the neck too much when you play a fanned fret.

it has side dots... they are luminlay dots centred on the veneer, so you only get half a dot over the body and they don't show at all in that pic do they :D

  • Lovely job.  I particularly like that heel carve.

    side dots

with the alignment on veneer idea totally nicked from @Andyjr1515 ; ;)

the plan for finish is a grey/black burst on the flat top, leaving the bevels clean and natural.  It will look quite different to the look it has now... should highlight the offset waist and flowing bevels a bit more

It looks really good.  There's a lot of flame in the neck.  What are you going to use for pickups?

I told Nath not to buy anything until we had a playable guitar he liked, although its more because he will want to try the "latest thing".  Also not decided on final control position as I know he will want to hold it with strings on to decide that.

Love those side dots with the veneer.    That body shape looks very player-friendly.     Would love to see a demo of this one when it’s finished.

Its definitely  a comfy guitar...  expect it to be about 7lb when done, so nice and light too.  This old mahogany felt hollow when it was a plank, very light.

Quite the opposite of what I would normally go for, but it’s a lovely, lovely, thing!
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

So last year I tried the black burst, didn't quite go to plan.

    Started again today

But I'm not sure I like that look, so the rest of it got a coat of trans grey too

In some lights it's all quite dark, but pops when a light hits it

I think that's nearly at a point I am happy to clear coat it

Just read through this thread and found it to be a great build story - shaping to be a fine looking guitar.

As someone with no woodworking skills, I find it fascinating to follow stories like this, thanks for updating the thread.

Highly unlikely this would be guitar for me  but I absolutely adore all the contours and styling on it .
As for the colour , the first photo ( black-blue denim? ) looks amazing !

It's looking great Wez, hard to tell the real colour I think.  I'm happy that you are resurrecting some old build and will be looking forwards to seeing what else comes up.  Have you got your workshop sorted out at the new place now?

Yeah, it's different lighting above, no actual change of colour on the top.

I'm trying to balance old stuff with a few new bits too.

The workshop is workable, if not perfect.    I have a large summer house to do the messy stuff outside,  and a small spare bedroom which has in progress stuff and a workbench  in it so it's not left in unsuitable conditiions

Imgur isn't letting me upload for some reason, but hopefully you can see this on Instagram

Originally I had fully burst the back and neck.  It looked okay, but the natural look is so much better.

So it's a black burst on the flat bit of the top, this goes to smokey grey bevels  darker sides and burst wings on the back.   I'm really happy with it
