What's caused this? I've seen a few 2015 Gibsons with a bit of longitudinal crazing but this is pretty severe!

Looks like sinkage into the grain, rather than just checking, in some photos.

Still a cool looks cool though - Firebirds are my favourite ‘shape’ guitars.

Could be it's sat on a stand or hung on a wall in the full sun or above a radiator for far too long. That is very severe for a 3 year old guitar. The cold can suggestion would be another alternative.

Ive seen this in a few older Gibsons and was told it was from either incorrectly dried wood ie moisture was released after finishing, or the Lacquer mix was incorrectly. You occasionally see it on Les Paul headstocks

In fairness it proves the Gibson cracks were starting to appear way before bankruptcy

If you hold a can of “air” (the keyboard cleaning air duster type) upside down and squirt it, the propellant gushes out and it’s very cold, sub zero in fact... the rapid cooling causes the nitro finish to contract suddenly and “check”...

this body was sprayed up last week (Steve can verify, he sold me the paint) and the cold air method used to get the “checking” effect.

The crazing on the sides of the body almost looks like a reaction in the lacquer! Something similar happened to a body I had issues with ages ago. Too many coats of paint too soon before the previous ones had gassed off. Horrible crazy paving look, nothing to do but sand back to wood.

The horizontal checking across the body looks fairly normal to me... for a 40 year old guitar though! My old acoustic has the same looking checking.

Bizarre crackle effect around the end grain, that can't be normal wood or lacquer shrinking. Looks like someone's tried freeze spray or something similar as said, or an odd paint reaction.

I don't think its freezer checking or compressed air which tends to get localised spots where the can is aimed.

It reminds me of moisture damage, where a guitar has been stored in a damp environment and expanded significantly. almost looks like its delaminating on the walnut, but it could just be pale wood

I got a separate freezer for the workshop when my dad was upgrading... but I could really do with a chest freezer instead for the set/trough neck stuff

I just let my wife's cold stare  when I bring in another guitar  do all the relicing .She could  freeze a  charging lion dead in seconds  just by looking  and certainly  crack a perfect finish in minutes .Fortunately  she also has a lovely smile .

Good choice of pie, I prefer a proper pastry to puff but you can't knock steak and ale.  Good job with the compressed air too.
