bought a classic vibe tele custom...booom !
I don’t own a Baja, but the other guitarist in my band has one and it is a great guitar. If it were me, I’d pay for a nitro refin, which would take it to the next level - reduce weight and increase resonance.
I tried a few of these and really wanted to like them, but the necks were really thin and setups not great. Could have dealt with the latter but I need a reasonable chunk on a tele neck, pity they don’t do a fat neck version.
Then they doubled the price and the reputation stuck, even though they were mostly heavy, a little clunky feeling and not very lively compared to a great Tele.
They're ok, but in a shootout of eight different Fender and Squier Teles I did when shopping for a mate it was well beaten by a couple of the Squiers and the US Vintage Reissue, though it was way better sounding than the US Std to be fair.

I'm sure removing the finish would help. Not that you should have to, but if you liked the neck profile (something where many other models fall down for me) removing half a pound of finish should make an okay guitar very good.
Good example here:-

But I agree on the reputation/price thing, new the model has drifted away from being nearly as appealing as it did.
