New R8? - The `what I told the wife` thread

What's Hot
newi123newi123 Frets: 863
There should be a fair few to contribute to this..........

After trying out `the men on the internet I`ve never met made me do it` in my tiny misguided brain, I instead went for:

me `I`ve accidentally bought a new guitar - it was excellent value!`
wife `(laughs) what sort`
me 'a really nice gibson`
wife 'I though you weren`t gibson shaped?`
me `I keep trying`
wife`maybe you should give it a bit longer this time?`

So perhaps she`s a keeper even if the rashly bought R8 isn`t.......... if only she`d come with zero down and interest free credit........

I've been with my wife for 23 years, so it's fair to say she knows me very well.

    I just say I've bought a new guitar  :)

I solved this by not buying one.

Interesting. 10 years here and I got: 'go for it if you fancy'.

Maybe you'll be getting a lot more gear next year?

I didn’t buy one so I did the “look at all these mugs worrying about what to say to their wife! Pah! You wouldn’t get me doing that!”

    She replied with

“Dear, we know even if you don’t tell us... we have ways”

    :O

@Bridgehouse presumably you fold Mrs Bridgehouse that the new bass was a cheap second because all the frets and fallen out and they didn't cut the neck to length properly?

Actually the fretless thing was her idea. She saw a few and liked that one best. She even knew the price!!

I suspect that’s my expensive bass buying done for the year tho ;)

If I'm going to buy a guitar I just tell her. Though I have figured out that if you buy the guitars in parts and put them together later they're none the wiser. Just ask for advanced warning of a visit to the guitar room so you can take them back to pieces in time.

Not an R8, but she knows full well how much my new one cost. But she also knows full well how much it was discounted and how much I got from selling an old one, so the final price after all deductions was more than acceptable. And, in fact, I got a "ooh, your getting a new guitar!" from out of nowhere when the "it'll arrive on Weds" was confirmed.

Only get one every 5-6 years now, and keep it to the bare minimum of 4 guitars total

I just said “which one of these two do you like the look of?” And she replied with the one I liked best too. I told her the full story about it being a deal of a lifetime at £2499 and that I was gonna do the BNPL so I could pay with my maturing shares next year and she just said “I’ll pay half”

    keeper.

I was dead lucky ... the woman I married has worked with everyone from Iron Maiden to the Rolling Stones ... she knows how important instruments are, she knows what big kids we are with them, and can be a big kid herself (not that she plays, but she can appreciate a lovely guitar when she sees one).
My conclusion: every bloke needs to start his guitar collection ... not with a first instrument ... but with a missus who likes guitars! Oh, and for the female guitarists the reverse of course holds true ... not to be sexist about it.

  • Always buy guitars in the same colour. The wife will notice different colours but doesn’t have a scooby if they are just different shapes.

Make sure you hide the receipts tho.

Always always hide the receipts. Preferably in a really really secure place with a lot of spiders near by.
