I couldn't afford one (well probably on the 3 year interest free I could) so I bagged this instead. A Japanese Riviera from '83. A beaut!!

    Oasis-tastic :)
Those early 80s Epiphones are the nuts

When I learnt about the 330/casino relationship I did worry a bit whether I could have got this much fun for a quarter of the price!! Didn't worry me that much, I have Epiphones in the loft (Les Paul, SG) that I used to gig with, that I replaced with Gibsons when I got interested in playing again - whenever I've got the Epiphones out since then, I always put them back after cleaning and set-up... I just prefer the feel and vibe of the Gibsons. Even with their various issues.

Could it be nitro vs poly? I've found poly on a semi acoustic doesn't feel right. A thin nitro finish makes the guitar feel more alive. I was negotiating to buy a Casino 61 reissue which I'd assumed was the original nitro finish but found out at last moment it was poly so had to cancel. Fortunately the seller was very decent about it.

I think that's a BIG part of it. Whether or not it's because "the thin nitro makes the guitar feel more alive", I'm not so sure... but all my favourite guitars in my herd have nitro of some sort on them... (or an oil finish of some sort - my Feline, and a Gibson Explorer I refinished myself).

The exceptions to this, for me, are my two Baja teles - an early 50s (there's no WAY that finish could be described as thin!) and a 60s that is a couple of years old now. They feel "old skool" in my hands. I have Japanese Custom Tele too - that's fab, but just doesn't feel nearly as welcoming.

Didn't you get that first Baja Tele refretted with huge jumbo frets by Feline?  Not exactly old skool!  ;)

Hehe - mebbe "old skool" wasn't the right term! Yep, the 50s has huge mahoosive frets on it - and I still love it like that. Haven't felt the need to do it to any other Fenders, though.

I'm trying to figure out how to describe the difference better. How about: Comfy old sofa that hasn't worn out yet (nitro, oil, these Bajas) or reasonably comfy plastic bench/seating (poly finished guitars). I'm really not sure it affects the tone/timbre, but it definitely affects my perception of playing and which one I'll choose to play.

  • Stunner, congrats and have a wow! Seriously nice guitar for the money!
For the money??? Is 2k pocket money now then?? :D
When you compare it to the £2.5k everyone else recently shelled out out for a Les Paul then yes its a bargain........

Agree, nitro for me is all about feel. Pretty sure for most designs there’s no effect on tone. Apart from one Dean shred guitar all my axes are nitro.

  • If I´m ever in a situation where a spare 2k can be spent in one go, one of these is it.

Gibson really need to get some nice new semi hollows into the shops. This one was a bargain.

I had one of those until very recently, ended up changing it for a Wildwood spec '59 reissue. If I could have kept the two of them though, I would. Lovely guitar and beuatiful in that colour too.
    Call me Dave.
