Odd bug in the search utility

What's Hot
This is weird. Do a search for a word beginning with 'P'.

Then click on any of the page links to see more search results. The links change the search to the same word without the 'P' at the start!!

e.g. "Peterborough" becomes "eterborough".

I'm guessing it's something to do with HTML encoding.

  • And then it fixed itself. I tried a few different words, but now I've gone back to the search page it is working correctly.
I'll see if I can reproduce that.

Sounds like someone is taking the P.

  • This one was identified a couple of years back - it's a bug in Vanilla, but I'm damned if I can find it, and nothing's been done upstream either.

    Seriously weird one.

  • Tried the word Puffin just to try this out. No bug although I'm quite surprised how often the phrase wank puffin has been used on here over the years.
Perhaps I should be bring that back into circulation.
Tipton is a small fishing village in the borough of Sandwell.

It's weird that it is intermittent. Was it only words beginning with 'P' that were affected? Or was that just the intermittent nature of it?

It wasn't intermittent when I last looked at it. Near as I can tell, here's how you reproduce it reliably:

1 - Search for something beginning with lower-case "p", eg "plant".
2 - Results show for "plant".
3 - Go to the next page (or any page of the results other than the first)
4 - Results show for "lant".

Only works for lower-case "p". It's not actually an encoding or search bug - there's some sort of manipulation of the querystring parameters going on with the paging component, which removes a lower-case "p" only if it's the first character of the search string (search for "pepper", for example, and it changes to "epper").
