For years it was the Fulltone OCD - gain down very low with volume up high. Recently the Timmy replaced it, using similar settings. I almost never play completely clean, and as someone above put it, the Timmy just adds a tiny bit of hair to the sound that brings some life to the tone. If I'm playing a strat my compressor (Wampler Ego) is almost always on as well.
I guess for most of us, our ‘always on’ sound is based on a little bit oh hair, or a bit of warmth or a touch of compression.

And after years and years of spending, I have found the Greer Lightspeed to be awesome at this. It is incredibly neutral, and you can match unity volume with no colouration and then adjust accordingly. Superb.

  • Boss SD-2, crunch channel, level set fairly high, drive set low, tone 11/12, produces a lovely sparkly, light crunch through a PRRI.

Way Huge Green Rhino is on about 95% of the time. Absolute clean stuff is extremely rare.
