‘Reaction’ videos

There seems to be an awful lot of people posting videos on YouTube of themselves watching videos on YouTube - and - in many cases, getting paid in the form of donations to do so!

Has the world gone mad ?

WHY would anyone want to watch a video of someone else watching a video, much less actually give them money to do it??

F1 is obsessed with reactions at the moment. In one of the recent races there was a good battle between two drivers and the TV viewers missed most of it because the director chose to show the mechanics and crowd reacting to it instead.

There's times when I'm glad that I grew up in the 90s.

The people I meet that are 25 or under now feel this need to attention seek, even if they're naturally reserved.

Some music reaction videos can be great though. I love this one; his reaction to Rage Against the Machines first album reminds me of it's huge impact when I first heard it back in the day. Watch it!

Whilst I agree the principle concept is the same, Gogglebox is different.  The people on there are chosen because they are witty, charismatic or insightful etc.  That's why it works.

YouTube reaction videos are just plain vanilla people, usually barely literate and as dull as dishwater.

It's the difference between watching a Premier League match or the kids having a kickabout in the park.

But, like gogglebox, people are free to choose to watch them or not. If they're making money, it's because people are watching. Mostly 12 year olds, but they're watching all the same.

Huge generalisation there. I watch reaction videos from time to time and the ones that are good are by people who are witty, charismatic, insightful etc. Just because they post on YT doesn't make them dull or barely literate. It's the platform of choice for many people these days, me included, and believe me you need talent if you want to make it a career. 

Oh, and as for Gogglebox? I'd rather shit in my hands and clap than watch another episode. To each their own.
