I use a boggo B&Q one but I’m sure there must be a more robust option? Maybe with surge protection etc.

You can get a surge protector that plugs into your wall socket, and then run your extensions off that.
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

I got a Monster 6 gang jobbie when Richer sounds were knockin em out half price at £25.

It has surge protection, though I mounted it to my wall at home as it/my gear never moves.

You can get more expensive ones that also 'condition' or clean up the power if its dirty.

Were rcd's recommended for live use?

As others have already said, get something with surge protection.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

Don't want to.put people off protectingbthier gear. But in the UK mains power is pretty reliable and surges don't tend to happen much. Digital gear can be more suceptable to flaky power whereas your 1950s valve amp less so.
If you use generators or do festivals with suspect power a proper protection device is recommended at a cost under about £150.

  • Whatever you use always Test it  befor using preferably with a PAT tester but check simple things like  the terminal screws are tight correct fuse fitted and get a mains tester plug so you know it’s wired correctly. Brand new does not equal definitely safe and working properly.

And @gringopig what benefit do you think you’ll get from that? I see that your based in Edinburgh. Do your amps run at 115 volt in which case you’ll need a step down transformer from 240 to use this? Or do you intend stepping down uk mains from 240v into this then stepping up again to 240 v.

  • @gringopig sorry had my serious head on when I replied and didn’t read it as humour, no offence meant . I get a bit anxious when folks start discussing electricity distribution as I see so many dangerous ideas/ bodges at gigs and as the buck usually stops with me I tend to jump on everything.

BS7671 regulation 711.411.3.3 (Exhibitions, Shows and Stands):

Each socket outlet circuit not exceeding 32A and all final circuits other than for emergency lighting shall be protected by an RCD having the characteristics specified in Regulation 415.1.1 (i.e. 30ma rated trip current, trips in 200ms at rated current, 40ms at 5 x rated current). So yes.
