I keep trying to persuade my family to come out to a top-notch Pakistani restaurant on Christmas day instead

Isn't it strange really..........what boils down to a family Lunch in December and everybody feels compelled to roast a substantial chunk of meat or a big Bird adorned with the compulsory trimmings of things like chipolatas wrapped in bacon.
Turkey certainly isn't a gastronomic experience and sausages are standard Cafe breakfast fare all year round.......If somebody invited you to dinner at a good restaurant for the rest of the year you probably wouldn't choose Turkey and sausages amidst the more interesting choices.I think it is an extension of the traditional American Thanksgiving Turkey dinner.
European Christians have their traditional foods on the 24th Dec........invariably Fish.Whilst that means a nice Sea Fish in Spain/Italy or maybe Trout the East Europeans enjoy a muddy old Carp.
Bizarrely it's become tradition in Japan to eat Kentucky Fried Chicken on the 25th Dec.
Since the Birthday boy was born in Bethlehem I think it would be more appropriate if the traditional menu was a meze of Hommous,Felafel,Babaganoush and Tahina with a nice Tabbouleh on the side.

small crown around£7 in Sbry's bigger £15 and will do 3x2+

Aldi/Lidl do some monster sizes too but be quick cos they don't get restocked

Crowns are so much easier and tasty too

You're right on the turkey, but I am a complete sucker for a pigs-in-blankets sandwich.

So thank you for the reminder. I am going to add many, many more packets to the Winterval shop. :)

  • Am I the only one who thinks turkey is great? You just have to be a half-decent cook and it's lovely

  • I've never understood turkey. My late abuela-in-law used to inject it with cognac and all kinds just to make it edible.

Turkey is to a decent corn fed chicken what Mutton is to Dorset Spring Lamb

For the first time ever we are eating Christmas dinner out at a local carvery. Not cheap but the practicality of cooking a Christmas dinner when we need to go and visit elderly relatives in various nursing homes, is a bit of a struggle.

I don't like turkey anyway, so I get a choice of other meats (I'll probably go with pork and/or beef) and a full set of vegetables.

It works out about twice as expensive as buying the bits from Marky Sparks and cooking it ourselves, which is worth it for me personally for the convenience of just driving there, eating and walking away, and letting someone else take care of the cooking and tidying up afterwards. All I need to do now is persuade the Mrs that she really wants to drive....

Exactly. It's all about appropriate use of the ingredients. It's perfectly possible to cook a turkey and have it be super-juicy and really good.

Obviously your average frozen Tesco turkey isn't as good as a decent organic, free range, corn fed, hug-a-tree chicken, but you can get decent well-bred turkeys too...

@Dominic you're welcome at my place to try mine, but it's a long flight!

Bah humbug. My step daughter is veggie this year. Still not sure whether to make something special just for her, or do something for everyone.

I wish more Spanish people would come over, there are hardly any decent restaurants around.
