Delay pedal with presets?

  • The only thing I really dislike about the DD500 is how the oscillations work. On the tape and analog modes for example if you crank the feedback up, you get oscillation. Okay. Fine.

But you also get nasty AD/DA clipping, which completely ruins the tone. Basically it hard clips, doesn't soft clip.

So to get around it you have to use the assigns and control the delay level at the same time, in order to artificially give yourself more headroom. And this has it's own set of problems.

Oscillations on the Empress Echosystem, Strymon Timeline, Source Audio Nemesis, TC Flashback, and even the Boss DD7 ... they sound better to me.

Another vote for Boss DD500, up to 297 user presets :o , wide range of parameters to tweak. Got one a year ago and still loving it. Sounds great, has a very defined sound at band volume, not the messyness that some delays seem to have at higher volumes.

The TC Flashback X4 and Alter Ego only allow up to 3 presets and as you spotted they are a bit on the large side. DD 500 no bigger than the size of two pedals and requires less power.

I have been able to (accidentally) set up some presets that seem to avoid hard clipping/harsh distortion with max oscillation without any issues. I'm using exp pedal or ctl switch to trigger max feedback and I can trigger max feedback and let it sit there self-oscillating indefinitely without turning to crap.

SA Nemesis is da bomb yo...although to switch presets on the fly you will need a dual switch Tap Tempo - Bright Onion make these for about 20 quid or you can get one off eBay somewhere.

A leftfield suggestion would be the Alexander Quadrant - same size as a Carbon Copy but can save four presets. Well worth looking up.

It may not be for everyone because it definitely has "it's sound" but the Mooer Ocean Machine is superb for me.  2 independant delays, reverb, switchable order, looper ... loads of presets.  I think it would be worth giving one a go.

A recent TPS vid with Dev demoing it showed me how little of the surface I've scratched with it too.

  • Did anyone mention the GFI Clockwork delays? Should be able to pick up a V2 pretty cheap now, presets, tap tempo, small footprint.

Thanks all. I don't need too many presets - three or four would probably suffice.
Boss DD-20. Sounds good, easy to program.
All day.  Not sure why anyone would want something that's easily tweakable?  DD-20 is a fantastic thing.

TC Flashback is pretty good but didn’t set my world on fire

m5 has great sounds but huge reliability issues

    DD500 is the business

It's this noise that I'm trying to replicate:

    And this one:

They're quite harsh but characterful sounding. It definitely requires a peak in the feedback loop at around 1-2kHz. Which on the DD500 with the feedback loop EQ is quite easy.

    Bye!

    DD20 4 Presets.
    DD500 297 Presets.

Are Boss kind of missing the middle ground here?

I found the Nemesis very user friendly on the preset front, and I am a total fucking idiot.

Not really. If you're the kind of player that only likes a couple of delay sounds then having the DD20's 5 options is easily enough.

The reality is, no one needs 297 presets, but if you need more than 5 then you're already going to be in the mindset of switching banks, so Boss kindly offer you more so you'll never run out.

There is also a fair few years between the release dates of the 2 pedals, so as things moved on technology wise, so much more was possible. Personally I don't really like the DD500, but I think that's because I don't really like overly technical pedals, I just don't have the time to learn them. It's why I like the Boss standard pedals, set and forget
