Bowie is not even in the running. I watched a documentary about his early years the other night, and if you've ever wondered why he's the only superstar living or dead who's never had his back catalogue plundered, remastered and re-released you should watch it.

He was unutterably shit, and would perform any terrible old hokum you can imagine. His only goal was fame within any niche he could carve, without the slightest interest in actual quality.

I agree Bowie's early work (laughing gnome period) was utter shite.
Some artists take time to find themselves.
Was he careerist? Yes, of course- but no less than Jagger or Lennon.

Space Oddity to Hunky Dory to Ziggy to Thin White Duke periods were all amazing though.
He surrounded himself with great players as well and gave a lot of unknown players a platform.

I even don't mind some of the Tin Machine and electronic period work.
Blackstar is probably the best final album of any artist I can think of.
I rather suspect that, without Mick Ronson’s input, Bowie would not have got as far as he did. For me it’s Ronson’s guitar work on Ziggy Stardust that elevated a good album into a great album.
He had some great guitarists over his career:

Ronson, Carlos Alomar, Adrian Belew, Peter Frampton, SRV, Fripp, David Torn, Earl Slick, Reeves Gabrels.

  • Not mad on either, but would prefer Slade. The only T-Rex song I really like is Ride a White Swan.

I prefer Sweet to both of them.

T-Rex although I'd go for the earlier incarnation. I recall playing pool with my best friend from school whilst listening to My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair... But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows around 1970 - he was a Bolan nut who sadly died last year. Bolan was in a different league to Slade who were mainly a singles chart act - good singles mind but patchy albums.

    Bongo Bolan period...

Slade for me - has anyone seen this though, Live Sweet (very little around) with Andy Scott using what appear to be H/H amps and all sounding rather good, great vocals from all, probably just before Brian started going off the rails...

And Jimmy Lea in Slade wanted to bring in jazz guitarist Adrian Ingram from Leeds/Huddersfield for Dave Hill - Jim was more of the trained musician and wanted Adrian as another musician in the band

  • Slade. Never liked Bolan's wobbly voice. Noddy Holder's autobiography is an entertaining read.

I have a deep love for T Rex (and it possibly shows)

But Slade and Sweet had more going on in a way  and certainly were huge influences on almost every band I loved thereafter

Many guitars have a re-sale value. Some you'll never want to sell.

I didn't know that, but I've said before he would've been a great choice for AC/DC.

Oh, and if I haven't answered the OP..... Slade.

He used to do a jazz column in the early days of Guitarist magazine, didn't he?  I don't know much about him but he didn't look like a likely candidate for Slade.

you are right about the jazz column in Guitarist

And yes he says the same thing - Do I look like a Slade type of guitarist' - then laughs and smiles

I initially did not hear the story from Adrian, but from another source - I see Adrian quite a bit at guitar shows, so asked him if it was true - And yes it was, but he did not see it working
