Ditto, it’s epic, and was def the most fun to play when I was in a covers band.

Funnily enough, this just popped up in my YouTube feed, RATM is a good shout - this guy can really play if you haven’t heard him before.

Not a solo as such, but the feedback outro to Drown by smashing pumpkins is glorious.

Iron Maiden - Here to eternity, should also get a mention:

  • Also, any solo by Dimebag Darrell. Not necessarily my cup of tea but what a great guitarist.

Hell yes. Dave and Janick's solos on this track mean a lot to me.

I was in my late teens when the Fear of the Dark album came out. And although I'd been into Maiden since Seventh Son I hadn't seen them live yet. My mum bought me a ticket for the Fear of the Dark tour. A few months later, and still with some months to go to the gig, my mum died. Going to that gig was one of the first times i'd enjoyed myself since she died. And in a very dark time of my life that album was a constant and happy companion despite not being the band's best work.

The thing I love about the solos on From Here to Eternity is that they're not typically Maiden. I love the long constructed deliberate guitar passages of tracks like Alexander the Great. But some times in rock you just want guitarists to just fucking rip. And they both did on this. Simple solos, but they rocked. Love it.

  • Megadeth - Dave's solo on the end of Holy Wars. It sounds like he's strapped to the bottom of a fighter jet. I love Marty's breaks but Dave's is insane.

Dave is a bit like Jimmy Page in that his solos sound like they could fly apart at any minute and it adds to the excitement.

Flight Of The Wounded Bumblebee by Extreme. Utterly gobsmacking.
Wiz'd also the earlier comment of "Get the Funk Out" is brilliant.

Also echo the "Don't Look Back in Anger" sentiment. Would possibly add (for the simple pentantonics) "Where Have you Been Tonight" by Shed Seven, and maybe "Slide Away" or "Live Forever" by Oasis.

Not a big Oasis fan, but I have to agree with those citing Live Forever.  One gem of wisdom from Brian May is that the best solos are those which the audience can sing along with, and that one certainly nails it.

I’ll still be sticking with this one as my pick, which I certainly can’t sing along to.

Wiz'd so sad it stopped before the "He Man Woman Hater" riff. I spent ages learning that.
