Clean Tones: Les Paul vs Strat

I get pissed off listening to comparisons of guitars and having to put up with totally subjective bias being maybe unwittingly employed.
So someone demonstrates a Strat and starts banging out Sultans of Swing on the 2 position into a clean Fender amp,
For the Les Paul it suddenly gets all growly and they play very distorted cheesy blues licks or some Gary Moore style wailing.
Worst of all is when someone demos an offset and suddenly the reverb is dripping wet and staccato James Bond pish or crap surf music is played.

It's so difficult to actually hear the differences between the instruments and I rarely hear comparisons or individual demos where unconcious or otherwise.

Maybe I'll post them and see who can work out what the guitar is. he he
