    I'd definitely recommend putting conduit down so you can pull additional cabling through if you need it, which ever solution you choose.

    Even if you don't need it immediately, I'd put a CAT5 link in place regardless, it'll be very handy.

    If you are laying CAT5/6 outside you really need the armoured version and it't not that expensive. I have seen rats/birds go through normal cat 5

    Yes, it'll be armoured cable and about two foot underground.  Since I'm laying power cable too it all has to be fully up to regulatory standards.

    You run rope through the duct so you can pull cable through later.

    Also, most electrical installers have rods they can use to push through ducting to pull cables through.
