I've been playing for a good while now and have decided that I want to buy one guitar that will last me forever (don't we all!)... The styles I enjoy playing are country, blues, rock and rockabilly. What single guitar do you think would be the most versatile for all of these styles? Price range around £1500-£2000. I should also mention I play through a Fender 68CPR.

Thanks

  • I bought a Duesenberg yesterday. It does everything. Have a good mind to sell some of my other guitars as a result.

Gretsch Duo Jet with a Bigsby. It wont do Gary Moore blues but will tick every box on that list.

Less characterful but more predictable would be a CS or other quality telecaster.

  • You would get a nice Gibson 335 for that money and be a very happy bunny.

Gretsch Anniversary. There is a stunning blue and silver one in here well within budget, or a beautiful Jaguar Tan.
    Awesome guitars.

versatility is in the player, not the instrument.
Go play everything in your budget and buy the guitar you like playing the most
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Jap tokai es, i sold a gorgeous one for £700. Worth a look, easily on a par with Gibson stuff. New i think they are £1500-1700
I would love to change my username, but I fully understand the T&C's (it was an old band nickname). So please feel free to call me Dave.

The Music Man Silhouette is very well made, and will probably outlast you.
I think it should cover all the styles you mention although you would want to check this.

This, for me. Go to your nearest big shop, explain what you're after and that you'd like to play all the Strats, Teles, Gibsons and Gretsches in your budget, plus anything else the shop guy suggests. Buy your favourite. That is the guitar that - for you - will do whatever you need.

I agree that the versatility is more in the player than the guitar, with a couple of hardware-specific exceptions:

One, do you want a trem? Because if your guitar doesn't have one, and the style requires it, I think that would be hard work!

Second, do you want those "in-between" Strat sounds? Because (afaik) nothing else does that except a Strat-style pickup configuration.

A Tele is probably what I'd suggest you look at based on what you like to play

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. At the moment I'm thinking of going for either a Gretsch duo jet or a telecaster. I'm also considering a blend of the two and building (or custom ordering) a Cabronita telecaster with a bigsby added.
